You should already be a confident before you attempt to speed read - it will not help if you have comprehension or vocabulary problems.
Some basic techniques include:
Place your right hand (or left hand if left handed)on the page and slowly move it down the page, moving your eyes down as you read keeping a slow, even motion. Your eyes may not always be where your hand is, but this simple motion will help you go faster. Don't start and stop but keep the movement slow and easy.
Use a piece of paper above the line of print to block the words after you read them. Move the paper down the page slowly and evenly and try to read the passage before you cover it up. This can help break the habit of reading and reading a passage repeatedly.
Use your hand to help draw your eyes across the page. Slightly cup your right hand (or left hand if left handed) keep the fingers together. Smoothly move your fingers from left to right, underlining the line with the tip of your middle finger. Pretend that you are dusting dust from the page.
